Measuring

ln order to measure distances (short or long) on a map you have to relate to the scale given on the map. In order to do this you:

Straight Line
  1. Measure the distance in cm from the starting piont to the finishing point.
  2. Once this is done, convert the cm into metres. E.g. - Scale: 1:1000 (1cm=1km) Distance: 5cm, therefore the ACTUAL distance is 5cm * 1000=5000m (5km).
  3. Remember to leave your answer in the units stated on the question (usually km)
Following Roads (corners)
  1. Measure distance in cm, however this time use a piece of paper to measure every straight line, and when you come to a corner mark your measurements and start again.
  2. In the end you will end up with many measurements on the sheet of paper, however the start and finish will be the distance for the journey (first mark-last mark).
